Saying Goodbye to the Past and Starting a New Series

Posted at Oct 16, 2014 6:00 pm

change

When I began to write the Sweet, Texas series, I only had a vague idea beyond the first book, ANYTHING BUT SWEET, where things would go and how they would develop. I needed to know the town, because my heroine, Charli, planned to give it a makeover. And I needed to know my hero, Reno, because, well, he’s the hero. And I needed to know some of the secondary characters to keep the story interesting. Other than that I had no clue that a fashionista goat, or an eighty-plus-year-old cowboy Casanova with a huge schnozzola, or two old birds with orthopedic shoes and a lust for young men would become such important players in the series.

I loved the surprises that popped up along the way. And I definitely plan to be completely open to any and all revelations that pop up in the new series. However this time needs to be a little different. At least in the planning stages. This time there will be a secondary storyline that will appear in each book. And the home of my six new heroes will be epic! So while I’m currently getting to know the hot men my stories will revolve around, I’m also getting to create the entire world that they live in. And, of course, the pesky situation that will loom over each storyline.

While I’m going to miss hanging out with the Wilder brothers every day, I’m really looking forward to the new group of guys. A few of them are already tapping me on the head, wanting their story to be first. Okay, maybe that tapping is a little more like hammering, yelling, and shoving the others back. It’s going to be interesting to see which one wins the challenge. Whoever it is, I can promise he will be as confident, sexy, and alpha as those sexy Wilder brothers. Maybe even more.

Stay tuned.

Heading Out to RWA 2014!

Posted at Jul 18, 2014 2:41 am

rwalit sign

The Romance Writers of America Conference is always an amazing adventure. I remember the first one I ever went to way back in the early 90’s in Dallas. I was overwhelmed by the workshops, and the speeches, and the awards, and the lively chatter. Especially the lively chatter. If you’ve never been in a conference hotel with over 2,000 women all talking at once, you don’t know what you’re missing. Afterward, you’ll be missing your hearing. Still, it’s a fun week of don’t miss opportunities.

I mean, really, where else can you go and listen to Jill Shalvis deliver a speech that has you laughing out loud, then the following day hear Kristan Higgins deliver a speech that has you bawling your eyes out (in a good way). Or you get on an elevator and realize that’s Nora Roberts standing next to you. Or you’ve caught the uber nice Robyn Carr sneaking down the hall to grab a soda from the vending machine.

It’s a time to catch up with old friends and meet new friends. A time to gather some crafty ideas on how to get through those pesky revisions, or how to present yourself properly on social media. Hmmm. I might have to revisit that workshop!

And there are parties. Oh! The parties! Such fun. And the awards ceremony where everyone puts on their prettiest dress an applauds the winners of the Golden Heart Award for Unpublished Writers and the RITA for Published Authors.

But the part I might like the most is the Readers for Life Literacy Autographing. This year there will be 500+ authors in attendance. We’re all excited to see our readers, sign our books, and watch the numbers grow on the amount of money we’ve raised to fight illiteracy. At last count RWA has raised more than $825,000! I am so thrilled to be a part of that as reading has always been such an important part of my life.

So if you’re going to be in the San Antonio area on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 from 5:30-7:30, please stop by. Say hello. And purchase an autographed book from one of your favorite authors. Not only will you be doing something fun for yourself, you’ll be helping someone learn to read.

Take a look at the list of authors who will be there. It’s amazing!

Hope to see you there!

Name the Wilder Baby Contest!

Posted at Jul 9, 2014 5:05 pm

Wilder baby

Hello my friends!

I’m just getting ready to start writing Jake Wilder’s Sweet, Texas book. There will be a baby in the book though I won’t tell you whose baby it is . . . yet.

I thought it might be fun to call upon my readers because you know the Wilder family so well, to name this baby girl.

Leave your suggestions here on this post, those mentioned on my Facebook page will not be eligible.

The winner will receive a copy of Something Sweeter (your choice of ebook or print copy) and a $20.00 gift card to Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Also, I will thank the winner(s) in the Acknowledgements of the book, so your name will appear upon your approval.

This will not be a randomly selected winner as the name of the baby is very important. To be fair, if there are duplicate winners I will reward all winners with the same prize.

So put on your thinking caps and think about the couples Reno and Charli, Jackson and Abby, Jesse and Allison, Aiden and Paige, and Brady and Sarah. What would they name a baby?

I will choose and announce the winner(s) on Wednesday, July 16 at 6:00 pm EDT.

And thank you!

Not So Great Moments in Aviation . . . Over My House!

Posted at May 30, 2014 5:22 pm

871335892_5824138e7d
Imagine you have about a week and a half to do another round of revisions on your current book and it warrants going through the entire book (not just a few pages), and you’ve spent two days struggling over one freaking scene only to realize it doesn’t work. Now imagine its 1:00 am and you’ve just hit the delete key on three entire pages of blood, sweat, and tears. Now imagine a plane suddenly buzzing your house while flying so low it makes everything in the room rattle and it sounds like it’s about to crash into your house. Imagine that plane coming back for another buzz. Imagine walking out of your house as the plane returns for yet another flyover and see through the darkness that the plane is so low it’s barely missing the roof of your barn.

Can you visualize that yet? Ok, now imagine calling 911 because WTF is going on? Imagine telling the nice dispatch guy the story, knowing all the while there really wasn’t a darned thing the police could do because the flying cars The Jetsons promised us still haven’t happened. Imagine the nice dispatch guy chuckling under his breath because he’s sitting in a nice office building and doesn’t have a freaking plane trying to land on his house!

Imagine taking the situation in your own hands—or camera—snapping a few videos and realizing that it’s an effing crop dusting plane at 1:00 am! This event went on for a full freaking hour. I was exhausted after the emotional letdown of hitting the delete key on my revisions. I’d been working since 7:00 am and I wanted to go to bed. But noooooo. Crop dusting guy was bound and determined to scare the spit out of me and I was too petrified to go to bed. You know, these guys do have quite the history of crashing, right? Bedtime didn’t happen until 2:30 when I was sure I wasn’t going to have a plane busting through my roof. I’ve lived here for 20 years and I’ve seen plenty of crop dusting, but never in the middle of the night!

Note to crop dusting guy: yeah, I know you were just doing your job. But seriously? At 1:00 am? How about next time you save those mad flying skills for daylight where I can keep an eye on you. And perhaps flip you the bird when you choose to buzz my normally peaceful abode.

That is all.
Sheesh.

Anything But Sweet is a National Reader’s Choice Awards Finalist!

current_mood_happy_dance

As a writer I’ve entered many contests over the years. Sometimes I’ve completely struck out. Sometimes I’ve made the finals. Sometimes I win. Each contest has taught me something, even if it’s only been to have better patience.

Making the National Reader’s Choice Awards Finals is HUGE for me. It’s something I’ve dreamed about for a really long time. And I am absolutely FLOORED by the amazingly talented ladies in my category. Kind of made me stand back, shake my head, and say “Really?”

Take a look at these names and see if you have any wonder why I am literally doing the Happy Dance!

CONTEMPORARY SINGLE TITLE

Avon Impulse Happy 3rd Birthday Celebration & Giveaway (final week)!

Posted at Apr 21, 2014 5:26 pm

PaulWalker_longer hair (640x512)Paul Walker was my inspiration for Deputy James Harley in SOMEBODY LIKE YOU. It’s so nice to see his handsome face once more time.

It’s been wonderful to celebrate the 3rd Birthday of Avon Impulse these past few weeks. I hope readers will continue to welcome the new, amazing, and upcoming books Avon Impulse offers (and very often at unbelievably low prices!). I’ve found some of my new favorite authors from this list and hope you will too.

Today is our final (boo hoo!) interview with Letty Silverthorne, the quintessential pastry queen of Deer Lick, Montana, and the mother of Kate, Dean, and Kelly Silverthorne. Some might think that’s a good thing since she passed to the greater beyond a while ago. I have to admit I kind of liked having her around again. She definitely keeps me on my toes, and for the most part when I’m not rolling my eyes, she makes me smile. Letty has no filter, and I can completely understand why she might have driven her kids a little crazy. I’m also pretty sure that being dead really hasn’t slowed her down much.

I’ve decided to “sweeten” the pot for this final giveaway by adding a Sweet, Texas coffee mug and a signed print copy of Confessions of Secret Admirer—a Valentine’s Day Anthology to my original prize pack of a complete 3 book set of signed Sugar Shack books and a $10.00 gift card for either Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

If you like this little prize pack and would like to be eligible to win all you need to do is take a look at your “keeper” bookshelf  Choose the second shelf from the top, pick the 3rd book from the left. Tell me what that book is and why you decided it was a “keeper.”

Giveaway prize will be awarded to a random commenter for this week’s interview on my website blog (www.candisterry.com). Winner will be announced Friday, April 25, 2014 at 7:00 pm EST.

BTW, the ebook version of SOMEBODY LIKE YOU (Kelly and James’ story) is currently ON SALE for a mere .99 cents.  Quite a deal (I think) for a quirky, sexy love story with a really hot deputy. 😀

So without further ado, I hand the interviewing reins (admittedly with a pinch of fear) over to Letty and a note of sympathy to her interviewees Kelly Silverthorne and James Harley. Take it away, Letty.

Letty: I can’t believe this is the last week Candis is going to let me do these interviews.

Kelly: Mom. Seriously? You were supposed to interview your three kids. You don’t have any more kids left to interview. Besides, you shouldn’t be interviewing anyone!

LS: Why? Because I fly the friendly skies these days instead of walking around? There are advantages to being a little see-thru you know.

KS: I really don’t want to know. At least not for a long time. I’ve got plans.

LS: Oooh. Sounds interesting. Care to share?

KS: Not in this lifetime.

LS: Perfect! I’m not in that lifetime anymore.

KS: Haha. I don’t see how you think that can be funny.

LS: (sighs) You are such a lawyer.

KS: Not anymore.

LS: That’s right. So how’s the whole clown thing working for you? BTW, way to annihilate the Sister Serious moniker all to hell. And would you like to reveal exactly whose chocolate handprints were on the bakery wall and how they got there?

James: They were mine. And hell no.

KS: (swoons). Thanks for the rescue big guy.

LS: Stop that you two. I have a whole list of questions.

KS: They better not be all about chocolate handprints.

LS: I’m not that shallow. And no comments from the peanut gallery please.  First question is for you my highly intelligent and usually very straitlaced daughter. The night of your sister’s wedding reception you got a little drunk and—

KS: Oh geez. Here we go.

LS: Ended up in someone who shall remain nameless’ bed.

JH: I’m sitting right here, Letty. You can hardly ignore me.

LS: Snubbing you was never my intention, James. And really, who could ignore a big, strong, handsome guy like you? I’m just curious as to where all this is leading and what your intentions are toward my little girl?

KS: Not so little anymore, Mom.

JH: Nope. (smiles and nuzzles Kelly’s neck) You’re a whole lot of woman.

LS: Kelly, could you please stop giggling? And, James? Please answer the question.

JH: Guess you’ll just have to hang around and wait and see.

LS: Best invitation I’ve had all day. From what I hear Candis is trying to figure out a way to bring me back.

KS: A scary thought.

LS: Eh. I’ll give her credit for a good effort and imagination.

Candis here again. Thank you, Letty. I do my best.

Okay, readers, to enter my Avon Impulse Birthday Party Final Week Giveaway, all you have to do is tell me about the 3rd book from the left on the second shelf of your keeper bookshelf.

Winner will be randomly chosen on Friday 4/25/14 at 7:00 pm EST.

Giveaway is open to U.S., Canadian, and International residents. If you live on Jupiter, sorry, I can’t afford postage. 🙂

Avon Impulse Happy 3rd Birthday Celebration & Giveaway (week 2)

Posted at Apr 14, 2014 4:27 pm

AnyGivenChristmasNew

22 years was a heck of a long time to work at getting a book published. I considered it a wonderful phase of learning my craft. Which is not to say I didn’t get discouraged or consider quitting once in awhile. Lucky (and smartly) for me I hung on. This month I have the wonderful opportunity to celebrate 3 years of my first Sugar Shack book being published with Avon Impulse.

Each Friday (April 18, 25, 2014) the prize of a complete 3 book set of signed Sugar Shack books and a $10.00 gift card for either Amazon or Barnes and Noble will be awarded to a random commenter for that week’s interview on my website blog (www.candisterry.com).

With celebration in mind, I’m continuing week 2 of Interviews with Letty.

For those of you unfamiliar with Letty, she is the quintessential pastry queen of Deer Lick, Montana, and the mother of Kate, Dean, and Kelly Silverthorne. She’s also pretty much dead. As in RIP dead. But that hasn’t stopped her from popping in and meddling in her children’s lives. Because, hey, when you’re good at something, why let a little thing like being dead get in the way, right?

Before we get to the interview with Dean Silverthorne and Emma Hart from Any Given Christmas, Letty has a couple of reader questions she’s dying to answer.

Candis: I have to admit I miss you, Letty.

Letty: Miss me? Where’d I go?

CT: Ha! It’s easy to see you’re still up to your old mischief.

LS: Well, what you might call mischief, I call intensive preparation and organization for the future.

CT: So . . . in other words, scheming to get what you want.

LS: Scheming sounds so harsh. (gives a wicked smile) Although all this formulating has definitely gotten me into trouble more than once with the big Kahuna. If you know what I mean.

CT: Which reminds me, please stop moving things around in my house or I’ll have to call the poltergeist police on you. Finding my underwear in the freezer was not funny.

LS: Eh. (shrugs a transparent shoulder) It all depends on your definition of funny.

CT: Let’s get down to readers questions, shall we? The first one comes from Karen who wants to know: What was your favorite way to surprise your kids with your arrival into their lives from the afterlife?

LS: Well, forcing them to listen to that hip-swinging crooner, Tom Jones, was fun. But sadly I was never able to surprise them the way I really wanted to. (winks) Heaven’s got rules that take the fun out of things. I guess my favorite way was to pick just the right moment to pop in. Like with my first visit to Dean. Even I didn’t see that one coming. I had to act fast because the love of his life was coming straight at him and he might have missed her.

CT: You almost caused a car accident.

LS: I’ve done worse in my day. Besides, it worked, didn’t it?

CT: (sigh) Okay, second question: Elizabeth wants to know if you visit your husband in the afterlife too, or is it just to “meddle” in your children’s lives?

LS: I visit my Bobby. In his dreams. Can’t give you details, but I do leave him with a smile.

CT: Yeesh. TMI. With that I’m warily handing over the interview reins. Letty, please be kind to Dean and Emma.

LS: Of course I’ll be kind. I want grandchildren. Maybe I’d better get going so they can get to work.

Emma: Dean, stop that! (giggles) Your mother’s watching.

Dean: Great timing, Mom.

LS: As always. So let’s get down to the basics. Emma, my darling, at first you didn’t care for my beautiful boy. What was up with that?

EH: There wasn’t enough room for me, him, and his ego.

LS: (snort) Good one.

DS: Mom!

LS: Okay, moving on before I get in trouble.

DS: Too late.

LS: Dean, in the beginning you were floored harder than being drilled into the fifty yard line when Emma didn’t seem interested in you. How did you handle her quick comebacks and flat-out rejections?

DS: Is it crazy for me to wonder whose side you’re on here?

LS: A mother never chooses sides.

DS: That’s not what Kate says.

LS: Answer the question please.

DS: It’s the practice of persuasion. Can’t give you the details but you might want to check with Emma about how we spent our first New Year’s Eve together.

EH: I can’t seem to remember. (grins) Maybe you should remind me.

DS: I remember it being pretty explosive. (pulls her in for a kiss) How’s that for starters?

LS: How did I lose control of this interview?

DS: You mean you think you had control in the first place?

LS: Maybe I’ll have better luck next week with Kelly and James.

DS: Right. Maybe you’ve forgotten Kelly’s a hard-ass prosecutor.

LS: Was a hard-ass prosecutor. Now she’s a clown.

DS: I’m going to tell her you said that. Maybe then I can get back to being your favorite.

Candis here again. Is it just me or are these interviews going downhill on roller skates?

Okay, readers, to enter my Week 2 Avon Impulse Birthday Party Giveaway, all you have to do is leave a quick comment about the hero in the last romance novel you just read and what made you love or dislike him. You don’t have to tell me the name of the book if you don’t want. Or you can leave a question for Letty (good luck with actually getting a straight answer). J

Winners for each week will be chosen on designated Fridays at 7:00 pm EST.

Giveaway is open to U.S., Canadian, and International residents. If you live on Mars, sorry, I can’t afford postage.

Avon Impulse Happy 3rd Birthday Celebration!

Posted at Apr 7, 2014 2:50 pm

SecondChanceNew_200x300

My entire writing career is thanks (and with much gratitude) to the birth of Avon Impulse and my amazing editor, Amanda Bergeron, who hung onto my first manuscript until Avon Impulse was born. So starting today and for the next three weeks I wanted to have a little fun and celebrate with some giveaways.

Each Monday (April 7, 14, 21, 2014) I will feature an interview with the hero and heroine of my Sugar Shack books. The interviews will be conducted by the one and only (some say, thank God) Letty Silverthorne. For those of you who’ve not yet met Letty, she is the quintessential pastry queen of Deer Lick, Montana, and the mother of Kate, Dean, and Kelly Silverthorne.

And, she’s kind of . . . dead. But that hasn’t stopped her from popping in and meddling in her children’s lives just one more time. Okay, maybe a couple more times. Well, how about there’s no end in sight to her mischief. For those of you familiar with Letty and her adventures, I hope you’ll be happy to see her (sort of) again.

Each Friday (April 11, 18, 25, 2014) the prize of a complete 3 book set of signed Sugar Shack books and a $10.00 gift card for either Amazon or Barnes and Noble will be awarded to a random commenter for that week’s interview on my website blog (www.candisterry.com).

So without further ado, let’s get things started off with Letty’s interview with Kate Silverthorne and Matt Ryan from Second Chance at the Sugar Shack.

Letty: Let’s get this party started!

Kate: Mom. Seriously? It’s been a long time since you . . . you know.

Letty: Died?

KS: Yeah. And yet you’re still wearing your overalls and plaid shirt?

LS: Eh. They offered me a robe. I figured with a daughter who was previously a celebrity stylist the white sheet ensemble would end up on Fashion Police. Plus there was that whole flying around and people looking up your skirt thing.

Matt: (chuckles)

LS: Enough about me. Let’s talk about you two. So . . . what did you think when you first saw each other after ten long years?

KS: (smiles) I thought he looked hot.

MR: First thing? (cocks head) Probably murder.

KS: What?

MR: Look, Hollywood, your tennis shoes left skid marks on the blacktop when you bailed on me.

KS: I didn’t bail on you!

MR: (shrugs) Whatever.

LS: Okay, okay. Let’s get down to business.

MR: I’m willing to get down.

KS: (giggles)

LS: Heaven help me.  (looks skyward) So you two were a couple all through high school and even after graduation before someone who shall remain nameless jumped ship. Matt, what was the one thing you missed the most about Kate during those ten years apart?

MR: (smiles)

KS: Really Ryan? Is it always about sex with you?

MR: No. It’s always about sex with you.

LS: I’d cover my ears but I don’t think it would help. Back to the question please.

MR: Honestly? I missed having my best friend to talk to.

KS: Awww.

MR: And the sex.

LS: Okay, moving on before you go crazy on me. This one is for Kate. When you bailed on Matt, he often came into the Sugar Shack for a soft shoulder and a piece of pie. What’s his favorite pie?

KS: Is this entire interview going to be about giving me a hard time?

MR: I’d be happy to give you a hard time.

KS: If I didn’t know how well you do that, I’d be appalled.

MR: Sugar, you’d be smiling.

LS: Pie, people! We’re talking about pie! Now can we please get back to the question?

KS: His favorite? Hmmm. Besides the obvious? (smirks) How about strawberry?

MR: (makes a buzzer sound) Guess again.

KS: How about you enlighten me?

MR: Peach. Because it reminds me of—

LS: Oh, dear Lord. This is payback for all the times I meddled in your life, isn’t it?

KS: I don’t know what you’re talking about.

MR: There’s always an uncertainty about things like that. And you did meddle. A lot.

LS: Can we get at least one valid question answered? Please?

MR: I’ve got one for you, Letty. Were you behind all those outlandish, intrusive, and preposterous dating incidents that occurred while I was looking for a wife—or at least someone who wasn’t Kate?

LS: Sorry folks, looks like that’s about all the time we have for today. Check back next week when I get to interview my beautiful baby boy, the very talented NFL quarterback, Dean Silverthorne, and lovely kindergarten teacher, Emma Hart.

KS: You really shouldn’t play favorites, Mom. It could scar the rest of your children for life.

LS: Eh, probably too late for that. (waves) See you next week everyone!

Candis here again. Wow. That was . . . interesting. Okay, readers, to enter my Week 1 Avon Impulse Birthday Party Giveaway, all you have to do is leave a comment about why you love contemporary romance or leave a question for Letty. Maybe you can even leave one for her to ask Dean or Emma. J

Winners for each week will be chose on designated Fridays at 7:00 pm EST.

Giveaway is open to U.S., Canadian, and International residents. If you live on the moon, sorry, I can’t afford postage.

So that’s it, my favorite peeps. Go forth and please, please, please, either leave a comment about why you love contemporary romance or leave a question for Letty. Next week she’ll be chatting with Dean and Emma from Any Given Christmas. 😀
